              SOUTH AFRICA

For five days we will be immersed in what could be described as the perfect music workshop environment. The Tommy Emmanuel Guitar Camp South Africa is an event for players and music-lovers of all ages, levels, interests, and taste! Whether you are a master player, a beginner, or just an enthusiastic fan, our five day programs offer activities and workshops for you. Our environments are non-competitive and are strictly about immersing oneself in the joys of music and our lovely surroundings! The Tommy Emmanuel Guitar Camp South Africa promises to be a highly rewarding and unforgettable musical experience.
During the workshop sessions, you can expect practical, hands-on instruction providing a first hand musical encounter with Tommy Emmanuel. Upon arrival at the Ivory Tree Game Lodge we will spend time to tailor-make our workshop sessions, to ensure that every student gets the most out of their experience. All of this personalized and tailored instruction, an al fresco ‘Bush performance’ by Tommy Emmanuel and the added bonus of jamming alongside a Guitar legend in the heart of one of the most beautiful settings in Africa will make this an unforgettable, once in a lifetime music safari experience.

On this music safari we will be staying at the exceptional 5-Star Ivory Tree Game Lodge, which is situated within the Pilanesberg Game Reserve, one of the largest volcanic complexes of its kind in the world with its rare rock types and structure making it a unique geological feature. The early presence of man can be seen in the numerous Stone and Iron Age sites that are scattered throughout the Park.
We will also visit Cambanos and Son – a curios shopper’s paradise, where you will be able to do curios shopping and purchase African arts and crafts, beads and gifts for friends and family. After our visit to Cambanos and Sons we will depart for the Ivory Tree Game Loge. During this Tommy Emmanuel Guitar Camp we will enjoy 2x daily game drives in open air Safari vehicles, and spend the rest of the day getting Guitar instruction from world renowned performer and instructor, and one of the most influential guitar players in the  music world – Tommy Emmanuel

Day 1: Depart hotel and visit the Cambanos and Son where you can enjoy a wide variety of African Arts and Crafts. Arrival, lunch and check- in at the Ivory Tree Game Lodge, followed by our orientation session and our first game drive which will officially kick off the Tommy Emmanuel Guitar Camp – South Africa. Dinner upon return and instructor concert to follow in the evening by Tommy Emmanuel and Clive Carroll.
Day 2-4: Each day starts off with coffee and rusks. We will then head out on the game viewer vehicles for our first early morning game drive. Brunch will be served upon our return, followed by our Master class sessions with Tommy Emmanuel and Clive Carrol. This will be followed by an afternoon game drive, after which dinner will be served. Evening concerts, open mic sessions and student concerts to follow.
Day 5: We will start the day off with an optional early morning game drive followed by breakfast at the lodge. Tommy Emmanuel departing lecture. Departure at 11:00 am.

Hello Thrill Seekers!

I have got an exciting adventure for you! I’d like to personally invite you to my first ever guitar camp in South Africa. Please join me at my upcoming Tommy Emmanuel Music Safari Workshop in South Africa on 23 August though 28 August, 2019 in Pilanesberg Game Reserve at the Ivory Tree Game Lodge.
My Music Safari Workshop will include five full days of lessons, workshops, and performances, with some very special outings also planned so that we all get a real taste of African landscape. There will be plenty of safari drives (sometimes it’s referred to as a game drive) where we’ll experience the exceptional beauty and nature of South Africa. Then, we dive into the mysteries of the guitar together in one of the most unique and pristine natural environments in the world.
This will be unlike any guitar camp I’ve ever done, and it’ll be a very intimate with only 40 students. There will only be one other instructor with me on this journey. I’m bringing one of my personal favorite guitarists, the great Clive Carroll. Clive and I both cover a wide range of styles – jazz, bluegrass, country, blues, Celtic, and more. I think in this amazing environment we might create a whole new style…ha ha! In addition to the safaris and the workshops, Clive and I will be performing every night with one intimate performance in the African bush.
My guitar camps have evolved in so many ways over the years. Each time, we learn something new that makes my next camp even more special. We want to give people the right amount of teaching but also enough time to jam, socialize, and really absorb the music and the environment. I hope you’ll join me for the Tommy Emmanuel Music Safari Workshop. This will truly be a once in a lifetime adventure!

Tommy Emmanuel, CGP

Join us as we embark on five soulful days of Finger pickin’ goodness under African skies.

His unusual talent and life are common lore in Australia: born into a musical family, Tommy got his first guitar at age 4 and was taught by his mother. He quickly learned by ear, with no formal instruction, and has never read music. By age 6 he was working as a professional musician in the family band (variously named The Emmanuel Quartet, The Midget Surfaries and The Trailblazers). By the age of 10, young Tommy had already played his way across Australia.
In the 1970s, Tommy was in high demand as a session player and sideman: he played on recordings for Air Supply, Men at Work and dozens of other popular bands and artists, as well as thousands of commercial jingles and tunes. Some of his most notable appearances were on the Air Supply hit singles “Lost in Love,” “All Out of Love,” “Every Woman in the World,” and “Now and Forever.” Tommy soon became known as one of the best modern guitarists in Australia. In 1985 he joined one of the decade’s biggest Australian rock bands, Dragon, and recorded the platinum-selling album Dreams of Ordinary Men. It is for his successful solo career, however, that Tommy is best known.
In the 1980s, Tommy finally met and got to play with his hero, Chet Atkins, in Nashville, TN. From that magical moment forward, Atkins took him under his wing, and the influences are evident throughout Tommy’s music: in his personal philosophy, technical precision, virtuosic improvisations and unusually broad repertoire (encompassing not only country and bluegrass, but pop, jazz, blues, gospel, even classical, flamenco, and aboriginal styles). Tommy speaks of his mentor with the love and gratitude of a son, and his dream of recording with Chet Atkins came true in 1996 when the pair made an album titled “The Day The Finger Pickers Took Over The World” for which Tommy received his first GRAMMY award nomination.
Chet honored Tommy with the title of “Certified Guitar Player” (CGP) for his contribution to guitar music, a very rare distinction shared by only four other people in the world. After an amazing performance with his brother Phil at the Sydney Olympic Games Closing Ceremony, the world wanted to know who this mysterious Australian guitar virtuoso was. In 2001, Tommy released his first solo-acoustic album, ONLY and his popularity has grown by leaps and bounds aided by a non-stop touring schedule and increasing exposure in the media.
His album The Mystery earned him another GRAMMY nomination, and in 2008 Guitar Player Magazine and Acoustic Guitar Magazine named him Best Acoustic Guitarist and Gold Medalist in the in the Readers’ Choice and Players’ Choice Awards. Guitar Player’s 2010 Readers Choice awards named him Best Acoustic Guitarist for the second time.
Tommy Emmanuel is an honorary Kentucky Colonel, a CGP (Certified Guitar Player), an Order of Australia Medalist (AM) and the holder of both an honorary Masters Degree (MA) and more recently an honorary Doctor of Arts (DR) from Charles Sturt University in Australia in recognition of his commitment to rural Australia and his contribution to music education.

"Guitar phenomenon Clive Carroll’s masterful compositions, coupled with his versatility and unparalleled technical virtuosity, have rendered him one of today’s most admired and respected guitarists."
